Plastic Free Living // Plastic Crisis & Climate Doom

If you’re anything like me, the plastic crisis looms heavy over your head. Thoughts of single-use plastics accumulated in landfills, micro-plastics degrading in our oceans and waterways, and the knowledge that recycling is not a viable solution, are all part of my daily ruminations. The worst part is, these thoughts are on top of all the apocalyptic headlines that are constantly flooding my newsfeed, and truth is, it is easy to get overwhelmed.

Yet, being overwhelmed often leads to feeling paralyzed and unequipped in the face of a crisis, and the answer to our plastic dilemma is found in action, not in doom. So let me stop us right here and warn you: this is not a doom and gloom piece. Quite on the contrary, this is actually a hopeful blog post, so if you are in need of inspiration, read on!

Plastic Free Living // Solutions & Hope for the Future

While the effort to curb our emissions and plastic production should come primarily from corporations, as many of you know, the crisis is well underway and there is really no time to waste. People in situations of privilege, like myself, and perhaps some of my readers, need to take their share of responsibility by caring and investing in a more sustainable future.

All the great change in history has been led by people, not corporations, and we need to be reminded that our actions and choices do matter, as they continuously weigh into the collective balance. So realistically, what could you do to curb the plastic crisis?

Here are a few ideas:

  • Raising awareness and inspiring participation in sustainable practices and clean-ups.

  • Invest in small-scale companies that design products that can last longer and are easy to repair.

  • Help grow the market demand for recycled materials from all recycling methods.

  • Ditch single-use plastics by using reusable where possible.

Bear in mind, I’m not perfect myself.

Far from it in fact! I still use single-use plastics occasionally, I fly when necessary, and I live in Europe, one of the world’s most significant emitters of greenhouse gases. Yet, over the past few years, I have had the opportunity and privilege to alter my lifestyle to incorporate more sustainable practices. Practices such as buying from ethical and sustainable brands, selling my car, consuming organic products, getting involved in activism, and shopping local. All in all, I try and do my best for the planet.

One of the easy ways I curb my use of single-use plastics is by avoiding plastic containers, especially when it comes to bathing products. In contrast with let’s say bottled drinks, which are very hard to completely avoid, hair and body care can be purchased with forethought. Choosing good brands is also getting easier as more and more small and ethical businesses start to pop up!

For me, that transition was not easy though. My hair is thin and dry so I have always struggled with natural shampoos, and it has taken some serious trial and error to find the right brand for my hair type. That’s also why I’m so happy to share this newfound discovery with you.

Plastic Free Living // Object Beauty & Their Commitment

Truth is, before trying Object for the first time, I did not believe a solid conditioner bar could provide the necessary nutrients to my demanding hair, well, I was proved wrong here. Object Beauty was a true revelation for me. Their nourishing conditioner bar has got to be one of the most moisturizing products I have ever tried, and it boasts some wonderfully active ingredients such as mint, black pepper seed oil, and argan oil.

To top it off, their products are a true feast of the senses! The cleansing bar smells of delicious patchouli and juicy lavender. A true new travel favorite. Did I mention their products were vegan, hand-made in Spain, and gender-inclusive? All right, if that’s not enough to convince you they are worth a try, I’m not sure what will, but let me leave you with some trustworthy transparency: Object Beauty has also been awarded the Butterfly Mark Certification by Positive Luxury, which demonstrates their business meets the highest verified sustainability standards. Simple as that!

Thanks for reading!
